ALPACAS, BLACK ………

ALWAYS IN DEMAND……………….

THAT CLIFDEN VIEW.jpg

Alpacas possess a unique combination of very special qualities that suit both the serious breeder and/or the lifestyler. They are gentle inquisitive animals - all with individual personalities. Each year they produce luxuriously soft fleece ideal for spinning, felting, weaving and knitting, and for sale to manufacturers. Alpacas are effective nutrient converters and are extremely environmentally friendly with minimal impact on fragile ecosystems.

Clifden Farm was an exclusive breeder of black huacaya alpacas, producing top quality fleece through superior genetics and exceptional care. The breeding herd has now been sold to a respected breeder who appreciates the continuous black pedigrees and plans to continue breeding black huacayas. Six young wethers are still living their best life at Clifden, entertaining and delighting us.

And why black? For sheer eye appeal, nothing beats black. Black alpacas look stunning in the paddock and produce fleece that requires no chemical dye. Alpacas are the only fleeced animals that produce true blue-black fleece. Black is always in fashion and that is why Clifden Alpacas shear black!

The following link will provide further confirmation that alpacas really do fit the bill as the ideal choice for small scale farming. Alpacas are a pleasure to own and manage, providing a source of endless wonder - and it can even be done by the first-time farmer!

Our animals produce fabulous fleece which we have expertly processed in Australia. Luxury black or cocoa black yarn in both 4py and 8ply is available right here online from the Clifden Farm Shop. We also have gorgeous grey yarn - achieved by milling our own black fibre with a small quantity of high quality white. All of the yarn sold under the Clifden label is 100% pure Australian alpaca, all natural with never any chemical dyes added.

Clifden Alpacas is proud to have written and published 2 children's alpaca books 'Archie the Black Alpaca: Archie's Haircut', and 'Archie's Big Win'. The books are beautifully illustrated in full colour with soft covers. They are wonderful read aloud stories for young children, and/or interesting tales for early readers to practise their skills. We know that both children and adults are delighted by the stories and sympathetic illustrations of alpacas and farm life in general.

All print runs have now sold out!!

Clifden Farm was also once home to a breeding herd of true black huacayas alpacas. In fact possibly the only herd in Australia that could genuinely claim all animals had a continuous black pedigree, as far back as Australian records allow.

The alpacas were loved and cared for just like the Belties here but as time has passed, it has become apparent that it is necessary to scale back farm operations. Sadly, the alpaca breeding herd has been sold and there are just 6 wonderful wethers left at Clifden now. The upside of this story is that the stud animals have moved as a group to a respected breeder who appreciates their unique pedigrees and plans to continue to breed black huacayas. Clifden genetics will be preserved while the 6 remaining wethers on farm live the good life and keep everyone entertained.

After such a long time breeding alpacas, we are very aware of the public’s interest in alpacas. We acknowledge their endearing personalities and even think we know a bit about their superior fleece quality and attributes. As such, we continue to offer a quality range of alpaca products on our online shop and attend selected markets and trade displays. There is something ‘alpaca’ to delight everyone.
